Sembawang Secondary School: A Secondary 4 class took the chance to pose for a class photo at the Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management booth on Republic Polytechnic's first day of Open House.

Over 170 students from Sembawang Secondary School attended Republic Polytechnic’s Open House that spanned over three days. They came to visit last Thursday afternoon, 8th January 2015.

The students were brought here by shuttle buses provided and once they reached, they were ushered around the school to visit the booths and know more about the courses available.

When asked whether the Open House was beneficial, 15-year-old Kirk Adrian Mendoza Bono said that the Open House had given him the chance to find out more about what he can do after completing his secondary school education. Previously, he had no idea of the courses offered but now, he knows more about how polytechnic education works.

Another student, Mohamed Amir Asrap, 15 years old, said, “I learnt all sorts of courses and realises that the courses here are not that lousy. In a way, I learnt that as long as you put in effort, you will progress and succeed even if you are not so good at academics. What matters is hard work. I also found out more about Problem Based Learning and it seemed much simpler than normal work”

Problem Based Learning, or PBL for short, is a learning approach that allows students to learn how to grasp a concept and find a solution for its problem as a team. Facilitators would be monitoring their progress, leaving the students to think by themselves.

“I knew a bit about PBL as a few students from Republic Polytechnic came for Career’s Fair and I went to their booth to know more and I felt that it is a unique way of learning,” said, 16-year-old Nur Azzira Farain Faizly. “After going to the Open House, I felt like I have the necessary information about the courses available here and I know more in-depth about PBL,” she added.
