His first impression of Chingay was that it was for “gays”, a term he used to label people who participated in it. Now, he never hesitates to come back year after year to be a part of The Chingay Parade.
Freshly graduated from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Muhammad Ghazali Ibrahim, 23, is one of the most experienced participants in this year’s People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM) item for Chingay. He had also participated in other various main events such as SEA Games and the National Day Parade (NDP).
The reason he came back after every year for Chingay is because of the friendships forged.
“Chingay is part of my family.
The friends and the people around me are so friendly and enthusiastic,” said Muhammad Ghazali when asked why he participated in Chingay. He also added that the friends he made from Chingay also joined NDP with him after.
Inspired by various B-boys acts, Muhammad Ghazali started dancing when he was in primary school. After learning the stunts, he discovered that he could do them with ease. When he first joined Chingay in 2010, it was easy for him to learn the choreography that was taught to the performers back then.
Even though it was easy for him to learn the steps, there were still challenges he faced when he first joined. However, with years of experience, he managed to overcome them.
“From last time until now, the difference is that, I gained more exposure and more confidence in performing in front of big crowds, thus I’m okay with big crowds now,” said Muhammad Ghazali.
He also said: “Better than last time, I was a bit reserved, shy and insecure. Now, I’m more opened, experienced and better than last time.”
He also expressed that he felt blessed and honoured to be performing with the whole contingent of PAYM in the special SG50 edition of Chingay.
Don’t miss out on Muhammad Ghazali with the PAYM team at Chingay 2015 where they are set to charm the audience during the grand finale.
